It has been a rewarding journey watching, orchestrating, and seeing my dreams evolve. (DREAMS) "Demonstrating Real Effort Always Makes Success" is what I believe and it has served as a compass which guides my journey.

The love and commitment of my family members has greatly assisted me in bringing my vision to life. My Mother ,as my manager (MoMinger), devotes a great deal of time with the logistics of this business, seeking out performance opportunities on my behalf, and promoting me as a performing artist. Dr. Black, my Dad has background experience in legal matters and I am so glad that he focuses on all copyright and legal matters on my behalf. Richard, my brother has a degree in Business and is a real "go-getter". Much love and thanks to him for believing in me and lending his business knowledge while at the same time running his own business affairs.

Having such a wonderful family team to take care of all the details of the business allows me, as a musician, to focus 100% of my attention on the music from the conception of an idea to the creation of the sound, the lyrics, the musical arrangement and playing the instruments.

I am very blessed!

John David Blacktag:johndavidblack.com,2005:Post/58497752020-06-29T21:47:50-04:002020-07-15T13:47:44-04:00Reflections from Summer (2019) Moments (North and South)
What a wonderful, musical summer (north and south)! I ended the spring semester with the Down and Derby Event with Tony Wilson aka "Young James Brown". Left for the Carolinas early May 16th and thanks to God, JetBlue, my Dad, and Check Fatback and the Crew, I was on stage that evening at The Joint at 1710 Main. Geez, it was great to be back home and just in time for Coolie G and Lion Soul's CD Release Party.

I wanted to perform at the Fenway Porchfest on June 15th, but I was at home in Carolina; however, not to despair, Godis Tanisha invited me to share the stage with her at Juneteenth and at the SC Caribbean Carnival. June 16th (Father's Day), I was blessed to perform in my Mom's hometown in Camden, SC. Camden hosted its 2nd Annual Summer Series at Kirkwood Park and I performed with J Montage & The Groove Band.

June 21st, the first day of summer ushered in the "Make Music Day, USA". Columbia celebrated music in many different locations. I was able to perform at the Richland Library (Assembly St.) and at Tapp's Art Center. Attending Exclusively Independent Presents: The Music Business Industry Fix Seminar gave me a lot of insights into the inner workings and legal aspects of the music industry.

One highlight of the summer was being able to perform with Eboinramm at the Doko Meadows Amphitheatre in my hometown, Blythewood during the Rockin' Red, White & Blue 3rd of July celebration. I was also blessed to perform at Reggae Grill, Red Beans and Rice, The Joint at 1710 during my time in Columbia. I was especially delighted to perform with Margaret Knight and Friends at Jazz on Dargan in Florance, SC. An added bonus was being able to perform with Margaret's daughter Tiffany Pollack, the 2019 Independent Music Awards winner for her Blues song: "Blues in My Blood".

I arrived back in Boston just in time for the 2Getherness Caribbean Boat Cruise (July 13). As the summer continued, I was blessed to perform at Herter Park, The BeBop, Wally's Jazz Cafe' and with the Boston Minstrels as well as being able to "busk" at the train station. I enjoyed the opportunity to relax and enjoy the musicians at the Cambridge Jazz Festival and a couple of Shakespeare plays. I had thought about attending the Newport Jazz Festival; oh! Overall, it was a great summer.

Blessed!!!

Here's what been accomplished:

1. Photo Shoot

2. Attend Concerts

3. Write and produce new music

4. Live shows (in concert and Stageit.com)

5. Study music content/concepts

6. Advertise and promote music on social media

7. Enjoy the ride!

There have been times I have been challenged, taken for granted, used and abused! Many things have "come for me" trying to break my spirit, and my will to emerge as a musician. But, I'll have none of that as the words of Maya Angelou says, "Still I Rise". I have been blessed with the gift of music and feel that it is my "Birthright" to create, inspire and share my music with the world. It might not suit everyone's groove, but it all comes from a place deep inside me. It comes from having gone up the rough side of the mountain and sliding down steep slopes.

I am excited to be on this journey no matter where it leads me. Please come along and share my journey. My CDs are available on all the digital platforms. I hope you have an opportunity to listen to them and find meaning as you traverse your incredible journey called LIFE!

I've worked hard during the school semester so part of my summer reward is to be able to attend concerts and do a few performances myself.

I have been blessed to attend several concerts by some very professional musicians. I started the summer by attending the Taj Mahal Trio at The Cabot (June 2) in Beverly, MA. Wow!, what can I say, I got to witness some skillful guitar playing! I attended the Boy George & Culture Club Concert at the Boch Center Wang Theatre (July 27). The next night, I got to witness the spectacular Taylor Swift Reputation Stadium Tour concert at the Gillette Stadium (July 28).

I have had a couple of opportunities to showcase my guitar skills at different venues around Boston and I am forever grateful to those individuals who gave me the opportunity. I performed at the Fenway Porchfest (June 16). I also was blessed to perform at the Bebop during the Make Music Boston event (June 21). In July, I performed during the Tribute to Senior Citizens at Walkers Park (July 21). Later that evening, I got to share the stage with Tony Wilson, the "Young James Brown", and Brothers Walk Band at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, MA (July 21). That was a very special 60th birthday celebration for a Mrs. Heidi. On Thursday, (July 26) I performed at the Herter Park Amphitheater with Tim McHale of the Boston Minstrels.

I'm starting to incorporate some vocals along with my performances. I'm slowing getting there and looking forward to some improvement in that area as time goes by.

Overall, I have had a very productive and rewarding summer ...and yet, there's more to come!

Throughout the years it took to become an Eagle Scout, I learned that as part of my civic responsibility, I should be available to serve my community in any small way. Providing musical selections at the City Heart 8th show presented by Unbound Visual Arts was a very special moment for me.
City Heart Art Show and Sales is an annual art show and sale in Boston, MA featuring local homeless and low-income artists. City Heart was founded in 2011 by Liz Powers. The show was founded because there was a wealth of wonderful art created by local homeless and low-income individuals but a lack of opportunity to share it with the community.

Throughput the year, the artists create art in community-based art studios that provide free art materials and professional art guidance. These studios are managed by several programs in the Boston area including the Cambridge Women’s Center, Common Art, New England Center for Homeless Veterans, St. Francis House, Pine Street Inn, and Women’s Lunch Place.

Despite mental illness, past addictions, and disabilities, every City Heart artist has risen to the challenge of supporting themselves through the exhibition and sale of their artwork. I enjoyed the live show and learned a lot about "stage performance". James is a master at entertaining and interacting with the audience. I have had some time to reflect on the show and how I can improve my stage performance.

I have done many performances as part of a band or an ensemble in front of a large audience like at Finlay Park or the Koger Center. I have also done solo performances as well, but with a smaller audience. The show in Beverly, MA gave me some insights into the dynamics of the audience. It is not enough to play your instrument, and play it well; you really have to work the crowd. I'm determined to give attention to working the crowd. With what I observed at the show and what I am learning in my Stage Performance Workshop (PST) at Berklee with Dr. Lawrence "Larry" Watson, I am well "On the Way" to getting there.

I released my CD, On the Way in February 2018. Since then, I have had the opportunity to perform during my spring break. I did a performance with my band, Karma Chameleon, in York, SC at the Jasmine Cafe' and Catering Restaurant on St. Patrick's Day. The band played classic R & B songs. RJ on Bass and DJ are two of my "go to" guys, but in York, Rick "Star" Owens, drummer for the O'Kaysions, kept it in the pocket. Thomas Robinson, aka "Bobby Q", who performed with the Chairmen of the Board, joined us on stage for a few selections. My Aunt Elizabeth was a great help in distributing my business cards and selling my CDs.

During spring break, I also did a solo performance at the Exclusive Cigar Bar in Atlanta, GA for the Black Business Week event. Many Black business owners came together to network and sell their product. I had some good sales from my CD, Thru the Door. Mr. Tommie Jones invited me back to the Exclusive another night and I was able to perform with singer Bonita Applebomb.

As my spring break came to a close, I did a Master Class, "Concert and Conversation" with the Robertson Family out of Union City, GA. We performed a number of Jazz Standards. The Master Class gave me an opportunity to interact with the audience. Some request for songs were made and questions were asked about different aspects of music, great musicians, and my development as a musician over the years. There was great audience interaction and participation!

The owner of Apache Cafe invited me to the 4th Sunday Poetry Open Mic Night, but as my spring break was drawing to a close, I had to leave Atlanta and prepare to head back to Boston.

I am so pleased to get published on the cover of an Atlanta magazine, "Breaking New Ground". This magazine is published by Mr. Christopher Davis of New Life Hat Society. Check out the web site and read about them below:

http://www.newlifehatsociety.org/

A movement of African-American female artists, entrepreneurs, and avid hat wearing females, through keeping the tradition of hat wearing in the black community alive, though not just wearing a hat, but for a purpose, through service. Our members are dedicated to helping unleash the chains of economic/mental slavery, oppression and depression among Black men and boys in their communities. Through programs and services we empower, and equip Black men and boys into and for entrepreneurship based upon their artistic abilities.

Part of the mission for New Life Hat Society is to strengthen and empower the Black adult male, young adult male and boy’s population via economic empowerment, literacy, entrepreneurship education, effective networking, growth and development workshops. Our overall mission is to teach them how to be self-sufficient, by teaching them how to make money based upon their skillsets. We teach them through a guided curriculum, and make certain that they understand the basic fundamentals of not just owning a business, but effectively operating the business(es) and ultimately expanding.

I met Mr. Christopher Davis about five or so years ago when I frequently played guitar downtown Columbia at Mac's on Main. The old Tapp's Building was being revitalized and envisioned as a center for artists. I hung out at "Meet me at Tapp's" and even played there and my brother Richard's art was displayed there. Mr. Davis always said he wanted to do an article on me. I'm glad that he believed in me and was able to remember me in this Special Edition of the January 2018 issue.

I had a wonderful time at the Isley Brothers concert at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston Wednesday Night (Jan 18). I was glad to see Ernie Isley again. I saw him once before when he came to Berklee College of Music. I took a picture with him then, but had long since lost it. I was delighted to have a photo opt backstage with him and some other members of the crew.

The show was great and there was so much I could "take away" from it as it relates to "stage presence". I have done shows before and I certainly "got game" when it comes to the guitar, but I could learn a lot from the professional musicians who seem to master "stage presence" that with ease.
John David Blacktag:johndavidblack.com,2005:Post/50210082018-01-12T16:45:14-05:002018-05-08T21:09:23-04:00Y R U N MY HEAD - (Why are You In My Head) By John David Black
Check out my song, Y R U N My HEAD

I have had an incredible time performing at the new Indigo Blu Gallery at the Village of Sandhills. The "Blu" hosts an excellent "Jazz and Poetry" night in an effort to highlight young and upcoming artists in the area. Mr. Bernard Jackson, the artist and founder of the gallery, graciously invited me to perform and it has been my pleasure to do so. I have grown a lot in the four week's time that I have graced the stage there and I met some very talented artists. I will forever cherish every moment spent in the presence of Indigo Blu Gallery and will take the essence of what it represents everywhere I go.

I was not around when the "Fountain Blu" was the "go to" place in Columbia, but thank you Indigo Blu for being the happening place now for my generation!
John David Black
